The Same Metal Costs 149 Times More Outside China
In the winter of 1979, gold traded at two prices. South Africa, under sanctions, sold its bullion at a discount to anyone willing to buy. Everyone else paid the London fix. Two markets for the same bar of metal.
The gap told you exactly who had power and who didn't.
That kind of split is happening again. Not with gold. With yttrium — a silvery metal most people have never heard of.
Yttrium goes into LED screens, jet engine coatings, laser crystals, and ceramic superconductors. It's on the U.S. critical minerals list. And right now, it costs $7.88 per kilogram inside China and $1,175 per kilogram in Europe.
Same oxide. Same purity grade. A 149-to-1 gap.
That number comes from Baiinfo, a Chinese commodities data provider, reported by the Financial Times. The InvestorNews Critical Minerals Report flagged it on July 22. A gap that wide can't be explained by freight, conversion, or quality. This is what export controls look like when they work.
China put restrictions on seven heavy rare earths in April 2025. Then it widened the list in October. Several of those October rules were suspended for a year — until November 2026. So the full ban hasn't even kicked in yet.
But the licensing system that replaced open trade has already split the world into two zones. Inside China, factories buy cheap yttrium and use it to undercut Japanese and European competitors on price. Outside, buyers scramble for scraps at more than a hundred times the cost.
The effect is showing up in corporate earnings. A Resilire survey of 400 Japanese manufacturers, reported by Nikkei Asia, found rare earth costs rose 22.3% over the past year. More than 40% absorbed at least half of that hit.
Chinese customs data showed zero shipments of gallium, dysprosium, terbium, or yttrium to Japan in June, according to Reuters. That's not a shortage. That's a shutoff.
And that's why the real prize for Beijing isn't the rent earned on raw yttrium oxide. It's the migration of advanced manufacturing toward the one place where those oxides are still cheap. Every month the gap stays open, another factory does the math and moves closer to the source.
The West is spending billions to build mines and refineries. Public financing for critical mineral projects quadrupled between 2023 and 2025, reaching about $65 billion, according to the IEA. But the question isn't whether they can dig the stuff out of the ground. It's whether they can close a 149-to-1 price gap before the factories that need it give up and go east.

ERI and Cyclic Materials Build North America's Biggest Rare Earth Recycling Network
Electronics recycler ERI and Cyclic Materials signed a deal on July 21 to pull rare earths, copper, and aluminum out of junked electronics at scale. ERI runs eight U.S. recycling centers and processes over a million pounds of e-waste daily. Under the deal, ERI strips magnet-heavy parts using AI-driven sorting and ships feedstock to Cyclic's hub in Mesa, Arizona — capacity: 25,000 tons a year.
Cyclic is also building an $82 million rare earth recycling campus in McBee, South Carolina, with room for 2,000 tonnes of magnet material a year, expandable to 6,000. This is the second big recycling deal for ERI in eight months — it signed a similar arrangement with ReElement Technologies last November.

Critical Metals Corp Makes Final Three for Kenya's Mrima Hill
Critical Metals Corp (Nasdaq: CRML) said on July 23 that its consortium made the final round of Kenya's tender for Mrima Hill. It's one of the biggest undeveloped rare earth and niobium deposits on earth, sitting on Kenya's southern coast with port access at Mombasa. Three American-led groups remain from an original seven. Together with partner European Lithium, the consortium carries about $1.5 billion in market cap and over $400 million in cash. The goal: mine to magnet — concentrate, separated oxides, and finished NdPr magnets, the most valuable product in the rare earth chain.

Lynas Posts Record Quarter — Revenue Up 70%, but Misses Estimates
Lynas Rare Earths, the world's largest rare earth producer outside China, reported record gross sales of A$288.9 million for the June quarter — up 70% from a year ago. The average selling price hit A$98.2 per kilogram, up from A$60.2. Production: 3,481 tonnes of rare earth oxide.
But the record wasn't enough. The result missed Visible Alpha's consensus of A$359.8 million, and the stock dropped 3.6%. Still, average selling prices are up 63% year on year — hard to call that a miss in any real sense.
Lynas also produced its first samarium oxide in March and is qualifying it with customers now. Amanda Lacaze retired as CEO. Pol Le Roux stepped in as interim chief on July 1.

The Element
Yttrium is element 39 — not technically a lanthanide, but grouped with the rare earths by convention. It shows up in LED backlights, camera lenses, laser crystals, jet engine coatings, and superconductors. China exported just 17 tons of yttrium to the U.S. in the eight months from April to December 2025, per CSIS.
Before the export controls, yttrium oxide traded around $6–8 per kilogram. The Shanghai Metals Market now puts yttrium metal at $38.22/kg inside China. Outside, European buyers pay closer to $1,175/kg — the widest gap of any rare earth.

USA Rare Earth Names New CEO Ahead of Serra Verde Merger
Barbara Humpton will retire as CEO on October 1. Thras Moraitis, who has run Serra Verde Group in Brazil since January 2023, will take over once the two companies finish merging — expected by end of August. Chairman Michael Blitzer became Executive Chairman right away. Serra Verde is the only large-scale producer outside Asia of all four magnetic rare earths. The transition puts that asset's leader in charge of the whole American-backed platform.

Andrew Forrest Pays A$190 Million for Tungsten Stake
Forrest's investment vehicle Wonongarra bought Oaktree Capital's entire 16.8% holding in EQ Resources, which operates the Mt Carbine tungsten mine in Queensland and the Barruecopardo mine in Spain. The stake is valued at about A$190 million. Shares jumped 34% on the news. The deal shows private capital is now paying up for operating Western critical mineral production — not just undeveloped deposits.

Canada Puts C$400 Million Into Teck's Trail Smelter for Germanium, Gallium, and Antimony
Canada Growth Fund signed a deal on July 7 to back Teck Resources' Trail smelter in British Columbia with up to C$400 million. It's the first deal under Ottawa's new Critical Minerals Accelerator. Teck may invest up to C$850 million total, doubling germanium and antimony output and creating new gallium production. Trail is an existing smelter, not a deposit awaiting permits. Ottawa gets offtake rights on a share of what it produces.

CSIS: China's Export Controls Backfired by Accelerating Allied Cooperation
Gracelin Baskaran, head of CSIS's critical minerals program, told Mining.com that China's restrictions pushed allied nations to coordinate faster. She pointed to a February State Department meeting with 55 countries — the largest ever focused solely on critical minerals. But she warned that the remaining gaps are heavy rare earth feedstock and magnet manufacturing. Neither works without the other.
