The Pentagon Just Bet $400 Million on a Metal Nobody Mines

ntil last week, every gram of scandium ever sold was a leftover. A byproduct. Something pulled from the ground while mining nickel or titanium or uranium. In the entire history of mining, nobody had ever built a mine just to dig up scandium.

Then the Pentagon wrote a check.

On August 7, the Defense Department announced a $400 million conditional loan commitment with Sunrise Energy Metals, a small Australian miner most people have never heard of. The company will build the world's first purpose-built scandium mine at Syerston, near Fifield — a town of about 200 people in rural New South Wales. If it gets built, it will be the first primary scandium mine in the world.

That matters because scandium does something nothing else can. Mixed into aluminum in tiny amounts, it makes alloys that are lighter, stronger, and better at handling heat. Fighter jets need that. Spacecraft need that. The antennas on 5G towers need that. And right now, China controls almost all of it.

Beijing imposed export controls on scandium in April 2025. That sent Western buyers looking for options that didn't exist. Lockheed Martin moved fast. They signed a non-binding arrangement with Sunrise for an option to buy roughly 25 percent of the mine's planned output for the first five years. When your largest defense firm locks in supply from a mine that hasn't been built yet, you know how thin the market has gotten.

"We aim to make Syerston a pillar of Western scandium supply," said Robert Friedland, Sunrise's chairman. The news came at a White House meeting where Trump touted $3 billion in new critical minerals projects aimed at cutting U.S. need for Chinese supply (Source: SBS News). We flagged that same White House meeting in an earlier issue for its dysprosium and terbium deals — scandium turned out to be the line nobody was watching.

Here's what makes scandium different from every other critical mineral. The entire global market is about 80 tonnes per year.That's not a typo. Eighty tonnes. The world mines about 390,000 tonnes of rare earth oxides per year. Scandium is a sliver of a sliver. The market is small because supply has never been steady enough to count on. You can't build a product line around a byproduct. Makers won't put scandium into their parts if they can't be sure they'll get more next year. And without demand, nobody puts money into supply. That loop has kept scandium stuck for decades.

So the Pentagon is trying to break the cycle. Not by proving demand exists today, but by betting that steady supply will create demand that doesn't exist yet. First you lock in the supply. Then the uses follow. Aluminum worked the same way 140 years ago. It was once rarer than gold — until someone figured out how to make it at scale.

Sunrise's stock jumped as much as 29 percent intraday on the news, before closing 16 percent higher. Scandium metal trades at $3,333 per kilogram on the Shanghai Metals Market, down 11 percent from July but still far above pre-2025 levels. Whether this mine works depends on demand growing into the supply. That's not certain. But for the first time in history, someone is building the mine to find out.

Metallium Turns Raw Ore Into 83% Rare Earth Chloride in a Single Flash

Metallium (ASX: MTM) reported strong test results for its Flash Joule Heating method on August 12. The Australian company took raw rare earth ore with about 12 percent total rare earth oxides and turned it into a product with more than 83 percent rare earth chlorides. In a single flash. No acid. No waste. The method, licensed from Rice, heats matter above 3,000 degrees Celsius in thousandths of a second. Metallium also boosted germanium content up to 280 times from zinc smelter waste and pulled a platinum-group product above 60 percent purity from old car parts. If this scales, it could skip the slow chemical refining that China controls. That's a big if. But the results are real.

Apex Drills 5.27% Rare Earth Grade at Rift in Nebraska

Apex Critical Metals (CSE: APXC) grew its high-grade rare earth find at the Rift project in southeast Nebraska. New drilling returned 10.2 metres grading 5.27 percent total rare earth oxides from 178.6 metres depth, and 8 metres at 4.48 percent from 273 metres down. Both sit within broader zones running more than 150 metres at grades above 2 percent. The find has now been traced across 700 metres of strike and stays open in every direction. An early resource count is due in Q1 2027. Shares rose 7.6 percent to C$1.28. Rift is one of the best-grade rare earth finds being drilled in North America right now.

Trump Puts $3 Billion Behind U.S. Critical Minerals Push

Trump laid out $3 billion in mining and battery projects at a White House meeting with mining CEOs on August 8. The package includes the Sunrise scandium loan, plus $58 million in Export-Import Bank loans for three other mineral projects. The goal is to cut U.S. need for Chinese supply of the metals that go into weapons, EVs, and data centers. Tensions in the Middle East have added urgency. Weapons stocks depend on supply chains that still run through Beijing. Real money is going in. The question is whether it's enough — and fast enough — to close a gap that took China three decades to build.

China's Rare Earth Price Index fell to 260.1 on August 12, down from an early-2026 peak above 300. Light rare earth prices softened while heavy rare earths remain high. The index tracks only Chinese home prices and does not show the much higher costs facing buyers outside China.
