Erbium Is Up 50% on a Deadline That Hasn't Hit Yet
In 1987, a team at Southampton threaded light through a strand of glass laced with erbium. The light came out stronger. That single discovery made the modern internet possible. It meant data could cross oceans without fading. Today, every undersea cable, every long-haul fiber line, every link between AI data centers uses erbium-doped amplifiers to keep data alive across the wire.
Now that element is spiking.
European erbium prices have jumped about 50% since the start of June. Chinese prices are up roughly 40%. Nobody is laying fiber fast enough to explain a move that big in nine weeks. This isn't about demand. It's about a date: November 10.
That's when China's suspended export controls are set to snap back. Beijing rolled out tough new restrictions on rare earth exports last year during the trade war with Washington. Then it paused the hardest measures for 12 months. That pause ends November 10. No one knows if Beijing will extend it.
The suspension covered elements used in lasers, fiber optics, and nuclear applications. Erbium, holmium, and ytterbium all fell under the expanded rules. Pausing them was supposed to lower the temperature. Instead it started a countdown.
So buyers aren't waiting. Argus Media reports that all three elements are seeing precautionary buying in both Chinese and Western markets. Holmium is up about 25% in China since June. Ytterbium has surged roughly 75%.
Even erbium oxide on the Shanghai benchmark rose 17.6% in July alone — the only rare earth in the tracked basket to post a double-digit monthly gain. The controls are working, even while on hold.
That's what makes this different from a tariff. A tariff raises the cost and you plan for it. An export control that might return creates something worse — a waiting game.
Buyers hoard. Sellers hold back. Prices swing on what people think Beijing will do, not on what it has done.
And erbium matters more than its tiny market suggests. It's the active ingredient in the amplifiers that power the global fiber-optic network. Washington is now weighing restrictions on Chinese-made optical transceivers — the small modules that connect AI data centers. China makes more than half of them. If Beijing cuts off erbium on top of a Western transceiver ban, both ends of the fiber-optic chain get squeezed at once.
But the bigger worry goes past erbium. Terbium and dysprosium controls remain in force under the April 2025 rules. Those are the magnet metals — the ones inside every EV motor and guided missile. With those restrictions already active, the entire Western supply chain is under real stress now — not waiting for November 10.
Nobody has built enough refining or separation capacity outside China to fill the gap. Erbium is the early read. Right now, it's saying the market expects the worst.

China Plans 50% Expansion at World's Largest Rare Earth Mine
China plans to boost annual mining capacity at Bayan Obo from 10 million to 15 million tonnes, backed by an investment above 500 million yuan — about $74 million. Bayan Obo, in Inner Mongolia, is the world's biggest rare earth deposit. But the expansion is mainly about iron ore. Rare earths come out as a byproduct and stay capped by production quotas set in Beijing. More rock from the ground does not automatically mean more rare earth oxide reaches the global market.

Ucore Raises C$69 Million for Louisiana Rare Earth Facility
Ucore Rare Metals closed a C$69 million bought-deal offering, with most of the capital earmarked for its Louisiana Strategic Metals Complex. The facility would separate rare earth oxides using Ucore's RapidSX solvent extraction process. If built, Louisiana would give the U.S. a commercial-scale separation plant that doesn't sit at a mine site — processing imported concentrate and recycled feedstock under one roof. The raise was upsized from an initial C$60 million target, which tells you demand for midstream rare earth exposure is growing fast.

Bank of America announced an 18-month initiative targeting $250 billion for digital, energy, and mining infrastructure by July 4, 2027. JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley have made similar pledges. Critical minerals are now folded into the same financing programs as data centers and power generation — the first time major U.S. banks have bundled them together at this scale.
