SOUTH AFRICA

The World's Richest Rare Earth Deposit Just Switched On

In 1949, a team from Anglo American drilled into a hillside in South Africa's Western Cape. They hit monazite — a red-brown rock packed with rare earths. At 14.5% rare earth oxide, it was the richest find on record. They mined it for thorium until the 1960s. Then they shut it down and walked away.

This month, the gates swung back open. South Africa's mines minister Gwede Mantashe stood on that same hill and cut the ribbon on Phase 1 of the Steenkampskraal plant. Three cabinet ministers came. Mintek, the state mineral lab, helped build the process. The plant can crush and mill 15 tonnes of ore per hour. First shipments go out before year-end.

That matters because this is not just one mine. It is part of a bigger shift. South Africa ranks only ninth in rare earth reserves. But reserve size is not the whole picture. Shanghai Metals Market says South Africa's edge is its mix: high-grade monazite, magnet rare earths, rare earths from old waste piles, and manganese on the side. Few countries can match that combo. And the government just gave it a name — the Critical Minerals and Metals Strategy — and backed it with state funds.

Three projects tell the story. Steenkampskraal brings grade — 14.5%, the best in the world. It was found more than 75 years ago, tested at Mintek, and is now in its first real run. Rainbow Rare Earths' Phalaborwa project skips the mine step. It pulls rare earths from waste left by decades of phosphate work in the northern Limpopo province. No new hole in the ground. Frontier Rare Earths' Zandkopsdrift in the Northern Cape has 789,000 tonnes of oxide reserve, rich in neodymium and praseodymium. It also holds manganese — a battery metal — which helps pay the bills.

Put them all together and you get about 12,400 tonnes of rare earth oxides per year by 2034. That would make South Africa the top producer in Africa. Seventh in the world.

Here is the catch. South Africa does not just want to dig and ship. Robbie Louw, the mine's top exec, told the ministers the goal is to refine inside the country. Phase 2 will crack the monazite into a mixed rare earth product with thorium on the side. Phase 3 is full oxide splits, using a method Mintek has already tested at lab scale.

That path — mine to split oxide — is what China spent 30 years building. South Africa wants to do it in less. The grade is there. The state money is there. And just 70 km down the road from Steenkampskraal, Australia's MRG Metals is drilling its own rare earth project at Garies, racing to put out a first resource. The Western Cape is turning into a rare earth district. The question is speed.

America’s answer to universal basic income

Saudi Arabia figured it out.

They pay their citizens $3,600 a month per family. Just for existing. Funded entirely by oil.

Meanwhile, politicians in America are arguing about Twitter, while you get nothing from the $300 billion we generate from oil and gas every year.

But there is a way to collect.

It's called the Patriot Income Plan, or P.I.P. for short.

It's not a government program. It's not a stimulus check. It's not tied to an election or a budget vote.

It's direct ownership in 14 entities that control America's energy infrastructure — pipelines, terminals, processing plants — and pay 10% a year to everyone who holds units.

Put in $10,000 = get $1,000 back.

Put in $50,000 = get $5,000 back.

Put in $100,000 = get $10,000 back.

42 payouts a year. Deposited automatically.

This is universal basic income for people who don't want to wait around for the government to figure it out.

P.I.P. is on pace to pay out $53 billion this year — a record. The next distribution drops in days.

Malaysia's King Buys Into a Rare Earths Miner

Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, paid $4.8 million for a 2.25% stake in Southern Alliance Mining. He paid an 11.84% premium over market price. Southern Alliance is an iron ore miner that has been moving into rare earths. Its arm, MCRE Resources, operates a rare earth project in Perak state. One tracker ranks the firm fifth in the world for heavy rare earth potential. The deal came weeks after Malaysia's PM said the country would build a $142 million rare earth magnet plant.

HyProMag USA Locks In Power for Texas Magnet Hub

HyProMag USA locked in power from Oncor for its rare earth magnet hub in Dallas-Fort Worth. Permits and contractor picks are under way. The plan: start cutting and finishing magnets by the first half of 2027. Finish Phase 1 by mid-2028. At full run, the plant makes 550 tonnes a year of magnet blocks plus 484 tonnes of co-products. CoTec Holdings and Mkango Resources own the joint venture.

China's Concentrate Costs Up 48% — But Nobody Downstream Is Buying

China Northern Rare Earth and Bao Gang set the Q4 concentrate price at 38,769 yuan per tonne. That is up 0.5% from Q3 and 48% from a year ago. The squeeze is hitting magnet makers hard. Digitimes says downstream demand is still weak, even as raw costs stay high. Pr-Nd has held steady after months of drops, but dysprosium and terbium keep falling. The pattern is clear: supply is controlled, so raw costs rise. But buyers hold back because the math does not work. Something has to give.

Government docs reveal Musk masterplan

Take a look at these two government documents.

Wall Street hasn’t made the connection yet…

But Musk’s moves could light a fire under one little-known chip company.

Because it holds 150 patents on an unusual technology…

That’s essential for this next stage of AI.

This company is the same size as Nvidia when I recommended it in early 2016…

So if you missed out on those 37,800% gains…

This could be your second chance.

The Magnet Metal That Runs the Modern World
Neodymium is why your earbuds are tiny and your EV has torque. Mix it with iron and boron and you get NdFeB – the strongest magnet you can buy. It sits in every phone speaker, every EV motor, every wind turbine, and most guided missiles. At $168 per kg outside China, it is up 12.8% this year and 159% since 2020. China makes most of it. Of all 17 rare earths, this is the one the world cannot do without.

Basin Energy Starts Maiden HREE Drilling at Rochedale

Basin Energy kicked off its first drill run at the Rochedale heavy rare earth site in northwest Queensland. Up to seven holes, down to 150 meters, looking for heavy rare earths in old phosphate rock. The state is co-funding the work. Rochedale is 15 km from Basin's Newmans find.

Lynas Plans Brazil Separation Plant With State Support

Lynas wants to build a rare earth oxide plant in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It would process ore from Caldeira, the deposit Lynas bought through its A$968 million Meteoric deal. Brazil's state bank BNDES may fund part of it. Local officials see it as a hub for the whole region.

REMX ETF Down 46% From May Peak

The VanEck rare earth ETF (REMX) fell to about $60, down from $111.55 in May. It had tripled in a year before the drop. The Excelsior Prosperity letter calls it a buying window. Most rare earth stocks are down 30% to 60% from their 2026 highs.

SMM: Pr-Nd Holds Steady, Dy and Tb Stay Weak

Pr-Nd oxide held near 740,000 yuan per tonne inside China. Dy and Tb are still soft. Buyers are in no rush to restock. They want lower prices before they step back in.
